Home Run Derby 2011 Preview: Jose Bautista

The participants with the second and third most home runs from each league will face each other to determine the second semifinalist. The semifinal winners from each league competed in the finals to determine the Home Run Derby champion. The flex ball, replacing the golden ball from past years, came into play after 6 outs. A home run hit off of a flex ball resulted in a $10,000 donation to charity by Gillette and MLB. Ties in any round were broken by a 3-swing swing-off, and if still needed, sudden-death swings until one player homers and the other does not.

Despite leading the league in several categories in 2010, he finished third in MVP voting that year. His .617 SLG stands as the second-highest in Blue Jays history and his .995 OPS is the fifth-highest among all Blue Jays seasons. Historically, his 54 home runs in 2010 are the 10th most in American League history.

Professional career

However, many believe that his Home Run Derby appearances negatively impacted him later on. Bautista hit his last home run of the 2010 season with a solo shot at Target Field off Minnesota Twins starter Jose Mijares. By the time the Blue Jays played their last game of the regular season, Bautista finished with 54 home runs, a .617 slugging percentage and a .995 OPS. In June, MLB named José Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays and Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies the Home Run Derby captains. On July 8, 2014, the captains each made their first three picks, while saving their final pick for July 10. Bautista ended the year batting .203 with 23 home runs and 65 RBI in 157 games.

Bautista was on pace for a 62-home run season, a feat that nobody's achieved sinceBarry Bondshit 73 in 1999. There was very little chance he could maintain this level of play, and it is difficult to argue against Bautista's offensive performance as he took the home run title for this year. Another potential additive to this decline in offense may be attributed to the lack of rest that All-Stars experience. While the rest of the league receives a well-deserved break over the All-Star weekend, those who participate in the Home Run DerbyandAll-Star game do not benefit from this mid-season intermission. Regardless, it is evident that the recurring myth that the Home Run Derby negatively influences second-half production is, in fact, a myth. Results are taken from players who qualified as having a first half worthy of participating in the Home Run Derby.

As such, Tulowitzki and Bautista will each be participating in the Derby, and they'll also each be selecting four other sluggers to join them. August 25, 2016 Toronto Blue Jays activated RF Jose Bautista from the 15-day disabled list. Overall, it's difficult to say if the Home Run Derby negatively impacted Bautista's incredible home run-hitting resume. The decreases he experienced were expected, and his ability to improve for the second half in 2014 is remarkable. Nevertheless, people will continue to wonder if his participation in the Derby ultimately led to the crushing injury that initiated the decline of his career. While there is always the risk of injury, there is no conclusive evidence that the Derby itself is detrimental to players. Some players likeGiancarlo StantonandJoc Pedersoneven increased their offensive contributions in the second half while still deciding to participate in the event.

His .203 batting average was the lowest of all qualified major league batters. The Blue Jays declined Bautista's option for 2018 on November 4, 2017 marking the end of his tenure as a Blue Jay. After working out with various Major League Baseball clubs, he turned down offers of $5,000 from the New York Yankees and $42,000 from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

He took over for reigning National League batting champion Freddy Sanchez, who moved to second base. For the month of July, Bautista batted .347, with 11 home runs, 29 RBI, and an AL-leading .765 slugging percentage, sharing American League Player of the Month honors with Twins outfielder Delmon Young. Bautista was also named Blue Jays' Player of the Month, which is selected through voting by the Toronto chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. With his 12 home runs in May and 11 in July, Bautista became only the third Blue Jay player in franchise history to have two months with at least 10 home runs. As announced by Major League Baseball, there were changes to the format of the Home Run Derby in 2014.

International career

Bautista walked 28 times in the month of April, breaking a club record that was set when Carlos Delgado collected 26 bases on balls in April 2001. Bautista was unanimously selected for the Blue Jays' Player of the Month award, and was also named the AL Player of the Month for the month of April . He made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2004, and, that year, became the first player ever to appear on five MLB rosters in one season.

The Cincinnati Reds offered him $300,000, which Bautista accepted; however, before the contract could become official, the team changed ownership and subsequently rescinded the offer. Bautista then created a highlight tape of himself using a camcorder and sent it to various colleges in the United States. There was no response until he received a call from Oscar Pérez, whom he had known from the Quique Cruz League in the Dominican Republic. Pérez informed him of the Latin Athletes Education Fund, designed for players from Spanish-speaking countries aspiring to play college baseball in the United States. He connected Bautista with Don Odermann, a businessman in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Records

But it was a September surge which caught the eye of some within the organization, as he exploded to hit 10 home runs in 30 games for the Blue Jays. We should celebrate these players for their momentous milestones, but lost in the shuffle along the way are some other home run feats which maybe don’t get the respect they deserve. Tulowitzki might even select teammate Justin Morneau, especially since the first baseman came up in the Twins' organization and it would be a homecoming. Although the honor was just recently bestowed on Tulowitzki, he's already mulling over his options. Giancarlo Stanton of Miami is high on his list, especially since he leads the league in homers with 20.

New setback for Fofana in Chelsea friendly

The major league leader in home runs will be watching the Home Run Derby from the sidelines on Monday night. Jose Bautista, Toronto’s utility slugger, has 24 home runs at the break, won’t be swinging for the fences, but it’s not because of an injury or lack of willingness or anything of the like; he simply wasn’t asked to. MLB, in all their infinite wisdom, chose to overlook the unexpected slugger, and that fact has fans and players alike confused and upset. What fans in Arizona and those on television across North America and around the world will see Monday night is a player who gives it his all with each swing.
